SL-track vs L-track Massage Chair: What's the Difference and Which Do You Choose?

When comparing massage chairs, you'll quickly encounter two terms: SL-track and L-track. They sound similar, but there's a fundamental difference. In this article, we explain what each type does, what the pros and cons are, and which type is best for you.

What is an L-track?

An L-track runs from your neck and shoulders, down your entire back, and then extends to your glutes and the top of your legs. The name "L" comes from its shape: straight down and then an angle forward.

An L-track massages:

  • Neck and shoulders
  • Full back (upper, middle, lower)
  • Lumbar and sacrum
  • Glutes and upper hamstrings

This is a significant improvement over older massage chairs that only massaged the back. Especially people with lower back pain or hip pain benefit from the extension to the glutes.

What is an SL-track?

An SL-track combines the S-curve of the spine with the L-shape of the L-track. The rail system follows the natural S-curve of your spine, allowing the rollers to follow the spine much more closely. Then, like the L-track, the rail extends to the glutes and the top of the legs.

The S-curve is the keyword. Because the rollers follow the natural curvature of your back, the contact is better and the massage is more effective. You will especially notice the difference in the lumbar region and the transition to the glutes.

SL-track vs L-track: the main differences

L-track SL-track
Reach Neck to hamstrings Neck to hamstrings
Spinal curvature Partial Full (S-curve)
Contact with back Good Excellent
Rail length Shorter Longer (e.g., 135 cm)
Suitable for General use Back pain, taller individuals
Price Lower mid-range Mid-range and higher

Which type is right for you?

Choose an L-track if:

  • your budget is more limited
  • you primarily seek relaxation without specific back pain
  • you have an average build (170 to 180 cm)

Choose an SL-track if:

  • you have back pain, especially in the lower back or lumbar region
  • you are taller than 180 cm
  • you want maximum massage contact along the entire spine
  • you are investing in daily use for the long term
  • SL-track in practice

Most quality massage chairs in the mid-range and higher segments are equipped with an SL-track. The Relif Harmonie has a 135 cm SL-track, ensuring that even taller users are fully massaged from the neck to below the glutes.

A longer rail also means the chair takes up a little more space, but the massage result is noticeably better for people with lower back pain or a larger build.

    Conclusion

Both track types are good. But if you are seriously investing in a massage chair for daily use, an SL-track is the better choice. The better contact with your spinal curvature makes a tangible difference, especially if you have back pain.
